Steve and Manda met with Steve’ cousin Martin and his wife, Sue, at Shardlow, near Burton-on-Trent at Easter weekend for a boating few days away.
Martin and Sue own a longboat called “Braggabout” – don’t ask about the name! The boat is 57ft long, chugs along at 4-5 knots max and creates a peaceful life on the canal. See the pictures below.
We were originally meant to meet at Long Eaton but Martin could not get the boat onto the river Trent for the short hop down to the Erewash canal – which was the original plan to scoot up the Erewash an back. The Trent was closed to boats coming off the canal because of the flood.
The weekend started very wet with constant drizzle and cold. We started from Shardlow and travelled up the Trent and Mersey canal.
We went through a few locks with Steve re-learning how to use them and stopped at the Bubble Inn, Stenson for some lunch, after watching a crazy eastern European woman in gold high heels and a gold lamy dress trying to operate the lock for her husband! She was funny 🙂
After lunch we carried on and passed the eastern European family again, trying to start a BBQ at the side of the canal, all smoke and no fire!
We then travelled up past Willington and nearly to Burton, where Martin turned the boat, with much amusement from us and a bit of shouting from him and Sue! Then we set off on our way back, this took a day and a half to get to this point….
After turning about (technical nautical turn!) just after bridge 32 on the canal and going back through the bridge there was an almighty thump, the boat rose up and bump we lost our steering! There was something dumped over the canal side that we hit. Martin reckoned it might be a motor bike.
So we had to limp back to Mercia marina, just past Willington, which took ages as Martin had very little steering. Luckily there were no locks, but there was a right angle turn to get into the marina, which was fun.
So we spent our last day and a half moored up in the marina waiting for the dry dock to open so that the rudder could be checked out! SO into the bar we went, got a bottle of wine, relaxed and then went back to the boat for dinner, which was a FANTASTIC lamp roast that Sue did, bot did this stuff flake! I want the recipe, but Sue’s says she just chucked it in, smarty pants. Then on to a drinks tasting session, you know the sort of thing… a pre dinner Jameson, large of course, G&T’s, bottle of red wind, two types of port and the on to the sloe gin!, leaving Manda with a headache on Monday morning!
We actually left about lunch time on the Monday to come home, after sampling all the marina facilities of course to ensure we maximised on the £11 mooring fee! Oh and there was a craft and food market, I bet you can’t guess what your’s truly had. Yep you guessed it, a bacon bap with black pudding and Stilton cheese, just the think for an Easter bank holiday Monday.
Anyway we got back and the next morning the marina called. Apparently all that had happened was that the rudder shaft had been knocked out of it’s bottom socket and the marina yard put it back into place for no charge, which was nice of them (Click on the images to enlarge), though mooring at the marina was expensive – £11 a night. There was an electricity post at the end of the jetty though which had some money left on it so we drained that as soon as we could!
